See the handout you received in class.
Description
For this packet you will become our class expert about a nation in Africa. Which nation will be up to you, but you are going to become our class pro about it. You are going to create a poster and write an essay about your nation, and they are both going to be awesome! See the detailed list under instructions.
Objectives
Students will identify and describe the geography, government, resources, and key issues facing an African nation of their choice.
Instructions
Your focus on an African nation will include two parts. You will create a poster AND write an essay. You may work with a partner. The same nation may only be done once in each class period. If you want to partner with someone in another class, that’s fine.
You need to tell me which nation you choose.
I will post a rubric on the website very soon.
Your poster needs to include the following:
A overall map of Africa showing where your nation is located.
A map of your nation with its name shown.
A graph illustrating something about the physical characteristics of your nation. This could be natural resources, crops, environmental challenges such as desertification, elevation changes, rainfall - the possibilities are immense.
A brief paragraph - written, by you, explaining one aspect of the culture of your nation.
A paragraph explaining the natural resources of your nation.
A paragraph related to something about the people of your nation.
The flag of your nation.
A photo of a well-known landform in your nation.
A photo of well-known man-made structure in your nation.
A photo of a cultural event in your nation.
Your name(s) should be on the poster.
Your essay needs to include the following:
A description of the physical geography of your nation.
A brief history of your nation.
Challenges currently facing your nation.
A description of the type of government your nation has.
Choose one aspect of the lives of the people there and describe how it affects their daily lives.
Your essay MUST be written in your own words. However, you may quote or do a close paraphrase of outside sources. They may not make up more than about 1/5 of your essay.
You need include a citation page with at least two sources. Use the formatting you have learned in English. Your essay should be about six or seven paragraphs.

If you need help, ask. However, I strongly suggest you start with the CIA World Factbook.
The Poster Quiz that followed this assignment is available here. About the only way to complete this quiz will be from the posters we made in class. If you are taking the quiz as a late assignment, you will need to use the posters as they are stacked on the filing cabinets in the back of the room.
